Patient Controlled Analgesia Best Practices

Please post your answers to the following questions below:

1. Does your organization allow PCA by Proxy (or Authorized Agent Controlled Analgesia)?
2. If yes, what patient populations are eligible?
3. What terminology do you use (PCA by Proxy, Authorized Agent Controlled Analgesia, Nurse-Controlled Analgesia)?
4. Is the practice limited to certain units or service lines?

Authorized Agent Selection
1. Who may serve as an authorized agent (parent, guardian, caregiver, nurse)?
2. How is the authorized agent designated and documented?
3. Can more than one individual be designated?
4. Are competency requirements or exclusions established for authorized agents?
