A National Alert Network (NAN) alert was recently sent out regarding the safe handling of concentrated electrolyte products from outsourcing facilities during critical drug shortages. These products, particularly concentrated potassium chloride, may be provided by outsourcing facilities in syringes or vials without the same labeling required by USP for commercially available products. Special precautions should be taken to prevent these products from being dispensed from the pharmacy undiluted, and inadvertently administered which could result in a fatality.
