Hi all,
Is anyone using in-house compounded nimodipine solution?
We recently changed over from extracting solution from capsules to a compound product, and have had some events associated with the use of this compound via feeding tubes.
1) that mixing it in cath syringe with saline causes difficulty pushing the plunger down back through the feeding tube. I have tested this and contacted the MFG of the vehicle we use, and it does appear that adding too much saline overwhelms the vehicle and could account for increased surface tension in syringe and difficulty pushing product out. We have educated to first instill nimodipine solution, then flush. Do not mix together in syringe. Thought being that sequential admin may help.
2) We now have 1 report of the actual feeding tube being clogged; this compound being cited as a possible cause.
Of note this is the only compound were we use this vehicle (UniSpend Anhydrous).
Below is our recipe and reference. Just curious what other have seen or have experience with this compound or vehicle.
Thanks-
Nimodipine 30mg/mL Suspension
Nimodipine powder EP 3 gm
Peppermint oil 1 mL
