Hi Everyone,
Our institution is considering storing 3% hypertonic saline in ED and ICU ADC machines given ISMP's recent recommendations to consider such to avoid potential harmful delays.
We are not able to fit these 500 ml bags in closed lid bins, but are considering a ADC alert to nurses and stickering of the IVPB to alert nurses of the concentrated electrolyte solution. Our nurses were asking if we would be able to sticker the actual IVPB and not just the overwrap, since they toss the latter once they hang the bag. We checked and BUD after overwrap removal appears to be 30 days for most manufacturers.
We are wondering if any of you are currently storing hypertonic saline without overwrap in the ADC or if you had any other creative solutions to label the medication accordingly, so that RNs not only have a prompt on ADC removal, but also while infusing this high risk medication?
Thank you! Alex
