Medication syringe recalls and smart infusion pump limitations

Bottom line question to the group:

- has your institution reviewed and/or approved the usage of non-BD syringes for your smart infusion pumps?

More details below:

In the last few years, there have been recalls for both smart infusion pumps and syringes issued by the FDA. At our institution, our main smart infusion pump used is the BD Alaris system. Recently, BD Alaris pumps received full 510k FDA approval. These new pumps now have a more restrictive syringe and PCA compatibility list.

During our Alaris fleet upgrade process in response to the FDA 510k pump approval, we have run into a question regarding the appropriateness of alternative syringes (Medline, Aerogen or EquaShield) utilization with our syringe pumps. We are particularly concerned regarding the use of non-BD syringes with high-risk population such as oncology, pediatric and neonate patients.

I have shared an attachment with information I have amassed regarding the recalls, syringes and compatibility lists.

I appreciate your time and attention and I look forward to your responses.
