Controlled Substance Documentation Time Allowance

Hello Colleagues,

We just got cited for something so hoping I can get some benchmark data from all of you.

Does anyone have in policy, the time allowed for documentation on the MAR and waste in the ADM of a controlled substance once removed from the automated dispensing cabinet.

I've heard some folks allow nursing up to an hour to get their documentation and waste completed once they remove a CS from the automated dispensing machine.

Do you have exceptions for the OR areas with anesthesia and/or surgical folks who pull out CS in advance and may be in surgery for hours ( before the waste can happen).

We're a children's hospital so we tend to have a fair amount of waste from a commercial size container ( vial or syringe) .

Thanking you in advance!
