MA Medication Administration

Hi all,

This may be a long shot, but I was recently approached by our outpatient clinic nurse educators with a question regarding medication administration by Medical Assistants (MAs).

We are located in Ohio, and Ohio law appears to permit MAs to administer medications in the clinic setting with certain exceptions, including controlled substances, IV medications, and, to my understanding, chemotherapy. The educators were asking whether there should be additional restrictions on specific medications that MAs can or cannot administer beyond those outlined in state regulations.

Based on my review, I have not found any additional medication-specific restrictions defined in Ohio law. However, in the limited information I was able to find, it appears that some organizations have developed internal policies that further define which medications MAs are permitted to administer.

I was wondering what other institutions are doing in this area. Do you have organizational policies that outline medication-specific restrictions for MAs, or any guidance/resources that could help inform our approach? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
