We have a request from our nuc med department to provide a vial of 23.4% sodium chloride for QC testing on one of their kits. Is anyone else doing this? If not, what are you using as an alternative (kit or QC method)?
Additional information:
Currently the only available radiopharmaceutical for a hepatobiliary study is mebrofenin (Choletec brand name). Please see attached package insert for this product. Commonly there is no mention of a quality control (QC) procedure in the package insert. The suggested QC chromatography test method is two parts:
1) use 23.4% saline as the solvent and SA paper as the media to determine % of free Tc99m.
2) use distilled water as the solvent and Whatman paper as the media to determine % of hyrolyzed/reduced Tc99m – this part has proven unreliable
Nuclear medicine departments would need one 30 mL 23.4% saline bottle that would last upwards of a year. Each vial would be stored in a fire cabinet that could be locked. Each fire cabinet is in a nuclear medicine hot lab that has access-controlled doors and remain closed when not in use. Hope this helps.
