How do you control multiple dispenses of Insulin products due to dose changes

Hi All,

We have an issue where our system is dispensing new insulin vials/pens when physicians modify dosing as it generates a new order number. We are an EPIC hospital since June 2013.  In our previous system, it was easier for our pharmacists to suppress the labels when the insulin order was a dose change and not a new start.  After going live with EPIC, we had patient's with 4 or more insulins in their patient bin. We have asked our pharmacy technicians to check the patient medication list in EPIC prior to dispense, but have learned from a few of our CPhTs that if it is too busy, they hold the label and wait to see if the nurse requests the insulin.  Now we are getting complaints from nurses that our insulin dispenses are 'always' delayed for new starts.  I am wondering if any of you have a common sense solution to this issue that we have not thought of.

Thanks!

Susan
