Maximum subq volume per injection

Submitting on behalf of a pharmacy student on rotation with me:

Hello,

My name is Kwesi Sefa and I am a 4th year pharmacy student at Shenandoah University. I am currently on my APPE rotations at Johns Hopkins Hospital with the Pediatric Medication Safety officer, Dr. Meghan Rowcliffe.

I am conducting a literature search on adult and pediatric subcutaneous injection dose volumes. We would like to inquire about your hospital’s policy/guideline on the maximum volume per injection that is acceptable via the subcutaneous route for adults and pediatric patients. If you treat pediatric patients, what are the maximum volumes based on patient age or weight?

Our current guidance used here at JHH is below:
premature infant: 0.5 mL
infants up to 2 years: 1 mL
children over 2 years: 2 mL
Adolescents/Adults: 2.5 mL

If you would also direct us to the resources utilized to develop these maximum volumes, it would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.
