Appropriateness review for procedural medications

Gregory A. Poff's picture

Forums:

Just wanted to inquire if anyone has addressed in your EHR, appropriateness review (e.g., drug allergy check; drug-drug interaction, etc.) for procedural medications (e.g., local anesthetic for dental procedures; local anesthetic for central line insertion, etc.)?

Thank you for any feedback.

Medication training device or use of expired meds in simulation training

Forums:

I am trying to get a feel for what others are doing for simulation training. Are you utilizing "fake" medications (like pocket nurse), real medications, or expired medications? What safety controls do you have in place to reduce risk of "contamination" (where fake or expired meds make their way into the regular drug supply or clinical unit).

Are you aware of any position statements from organizations on this matter? I know ISMP has posted a few topics to alert us to safety issues.

Aromatherpay use in hospital

Forums:

Hi All,

I am looking in to the storage of aromatherapy/essential oils at our hospital. Currently, these items are used by nurses who have specific training, but not treated as an order item. They follow a nursing focused policy and document in the EHR.

1. Does your hospital use aromatherapy or essential oils?
2. Describe how they are stored - e.g. on the unit, in an ADC, on the counter etc.
3. Do you treat these items like drugs, as it relates to storage and ordering? If, so please describe.

Thanks!
Liz

Methotrexate Issues

Jim Galasso's picture

Forums:

Our Pediatric Hematology Oncology Physician has noticed a toxicity pattern with our leukemia patients receiving high dose methotrexate. It seems that the patients have had delayed clearance and more severe myelosuppression than usual. She feels that it could be related to the product we purchase. We currently purchase methotrexate manufactured from Accord/Hospira and Teva. The manufacturers haven't had any recalls to date. I was wondering if anyone in our MSOS group, who purchases methotrexate from these manufacturers, have noticed the same patterns.

Thank you for your help.
